Box Jellyfish
Executive Summary by Ms CiCI
The box jellyfish gets its name as they are bell shaped or cubed shaped with four sides being very prominent, thus the name box jellyfish. A box jellyfish is extremely mobile, using their bodies to propel themselves forward at speeds up to 4 knots. These types of jellyfish travel towards the shores in the calmer weather, and settle around the mouths of both creeks and rivers after the rain. The box jellyfish are also called sea wasps and marine stingers. Box jellyfish eat small fish and crustaceans.
If a human is stung by a box jellyfish, it is entirely possible for them to go into shock or even heart failure, drowning before receiving help. The sting is so deadly; help must be received immediately if one hopes to survive. The sting is proportionate to the size of the person; for example, a young child needs less of a sting to cause dire results than an adult.
Jellyfish Stings
There are literally thousands of jellyfish types in the ocean, and the chances of being stung can be high. Knowing the types of stings and what to do can help if a jellyfish stings you or someone in your family. A sting from a jellyfish will occur when a person comes into contact with the tentacles of a jellyfish.
Physical contact with the tentacles causes an immediate reaction of the jellyfish stinging. Different types of jellyfish cause different degrees of stings. There are many different types of jellyfish stings that can occur from different jellyfish. Most stings cause skin eruptions. Allergic reactions are also possible in jellyfish stings. Other reactions beside skin irritations can occur from a jellyfish sting. A jellyfish sting can be horribly painful if not treated properly, leading to increased irritation and infection.
